Staffing

Staffing and Volunteer Counsellors

Each year we hire two full-time staff members to run Camp for the summer. Each week, they work with 2-3 volunteer counselors to run activities for children, teens, adults, and families. They oversee liturgies, campfires, water activities, crafts, games, and more!

Counsellor Orientation and Leadership Weekend Registration

Our Program Director (co-director) helps to create a positive environment for all to feel comfortable in sharing their faith, ideas, and struggles. We are often fortunate to hire a Seminarian to fill this role. We have had young men from St. Peter’s Seminary in London, St. Augustine’s/Serra House in Toronto, and Companions of the Cross in Ottawa. They come from Diocese all over Ontario and add a unique perspective for all. The invaluable experiences they acquire during their time at our camp greatly contribute to their personal journey toward the priesthood. Our primary focus is to recruit the most suitable candidate who can provide families with an exceptional camp experience.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Qualifications: 19+, strong leadership and team skills

The position of Program Director is to oversee the camp program and activities in coordination with an Aquatics Co-Director.

The position runs from the Sunday of Canada weekend until the Saturday of Labour Day. Six Families arrive each Sunday and stay until the following Saturday. A typical day will see staff and volunteers organize crafts and games for the children and families during the day and a family-focused activity in the evening. There are two swim times each day at our beach on beautiful Black’s Lake. Responsibilities begin each at 9:00 and end following the evening activity, usually around 10:00.

There are two/three volunteer counsellors each week to assist in the activities. A host family assists in the overseeing of the camp and provides support for the staff. Occasionally, we are privileged to have priests available to share the Eucharist with us. Otherwise, there is a daily liturgy that families help to organize and participate in.

This is a dynamic summer experience.

The following quote is from a past program director after his summer experience.

“Kumuntome is an excellent Christian Community. It offers families who practice their faith an opportunity to deepen their faith and offers families who are not as consistent in their practice of the faith an opportunity to have sustained contact with the Church. And yes, I do say Church, with a capital C. Kumuntome is a part of the Church, an assembly of Christians who worship Christ. It gives campers a chance to live with others who are searching for Jesus Christ, join them in prayer and in fun activities, and in doing so, strengthen to Church.”

In 2024 the summer program will run from Sunday, June 30th to Saturday, August 31st. We will have a mandatory Counsellor and Staff Orientation the weekend of Friday, May 31st to Sunday, June 2nd at camp.

A fair honorarium is paid at the end of the summer.

Our Aquatics/Co-Director (job description below) is a young person who is a qualified lifeguard, our minimum requirement is Bronze Cross with additional First Aid and CPR Training, but we encourage NLS qualifications. Our Aquatics/Co-Director is usually a Camp Kumuntome veteran and has a genuine love for the place and the people.

Our Volunteer Counsellors receive volunteer hours for their high school community service hours. These are an exceptional group of teenagers who love camp and the camp experience and want to share it with the families who are part of each week’s community.

The schedule for the summer will be created following the orientation and leadership weekend. Personalities and cooperation observed throughout the weekend are taken into consideration when creating the schedule. Siblings are not scheduled during the same week. An attempt is made to schedule a blend of experienced and inexperienced counsellors.
